Government
There are 39 state parks and recreation/nature areas in South Dakota. Many of these can be found in and around the Black Hills Region of South Dakota. The government of the Black Hills region is a part of the governing area for the state of South Dakota. Like other individual states within the United States, South Dakota is governed by a governor, a lieutenant governor and various governmental branches, i.e. an education department, an agriculture department, a health department, the department of fish and game, the department of environmental and natural resources, etc. The department of tourism and state development plays an active role in the management and progress of the Black Hills Region.
The importance of the Black Hills area to the over all state economy can be seen by the inclusion of so many of the aspects of the area in the state's emblems. For example the state's nickname is the Mount Rushmore State and the state tree is the Black Hills Spruce. The government is responsible for the protection and development of such attractions in the Black Hills area as Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse National Memorial, Harney Peak, Wind Cave National Park and Jewel Cave National Park amoung others.
