Angostura Recreation Area
The Angostura Reservoir is located in western South Dakota and is one of only a few reservoirs in the entire state. The word "angostura" is a Spanish word meaning "narrows". The dam forming the reservoir was originally built in 1949 by the United States Bureau of Reclamation for irrigation purposes, but today the reservoir and surrounding area is a mecca for recreation. Located in the southern Black Hills region of South Dakota, Angostura Reservoir is heaven to any water lover.
The average depth is 29 feet and the deepest portion of the pool is 75 feet deep when full. The lake's average summer temperature is 66 degrees F. With 36 miles of shoreline and some of the finest sandy beaches in the state, the Angostura Reservoir is a destination spot for many visitors. The reservoir even has a floating convenience store.
In years past, the region was popular for seemingly health-restoring hot springs, but today the cool, clear water seems to be the major attraction. The closest town is Hot Springs, South Dakota which is located 10 miles North West on US Hwy 385//18. There are four campgrounds along the shores of the water which offer a wide variety of accommodations. There are also six cabins which over look the water.
Other nearby attraction include Custer State Park, the George S. Mickelson Trail, a mammoth site in Hot Springs, and the Wind Cave National Park.
