Roughlock Falls

With its dramatic cascading waters and breathtaking natural surroundings, Roughlock Falls provides the perfect setting for romance, a picnic, or even a family photo. Touted as one of the most beautiful locations in the Black Hills, Roughlock Falls is fed by Little Spearfish Creek and flows down into Spearfish Canyon. The falls tumble over limestone cliffs, giving the area such a rustic an ancient atmosphere, that cinematographers for "Dances with Wolves" decided to shoot its final scenes here.

The term, "roughlock" comes from the era of difficult travel trough Spearfish Canyon. Travelers during the time of Calamity Jane and Wild Bill Hickok would "roughlock" the wheels of their wagon with logs or chains so they would not turn. They would then hitch the horses to the rear of the wagon and slowly slide down the slopes.
To get a better look at Roughlock Falls, walking into the creek is necessary. There are stepping stones to walk on, just beware that the water is extremely cold. For those who are adventurous, you can walk behind the waterfall, gaining a unique view of this natural wonder. The water is typically clear, and brown trout can be seen darting around the creek. However, during the winter, the creek is covered with snow. Roughlock Falls also provides and excellent place to bird watch, so keep your eyes peeled and bring your binoculars.
There are hiking trails and picnic areas near the falls for you to enjoy. The trails provide an easy scenic walk and rewards hikers with views of the falls and surrounding aspen trees and local fauna. Autumn provides a colorful backdrop as the aspen leaves change color. You'll also find ponderosa pine or Black Hills spruce. To reach Roughlock Falls, take 14A coming from either Sturgis or Spearfish. Turn off from the canyon at Savory. Near the Latchstring Inn on the east, or the Spearfish Canyon Lodge on the west, you'll find the turnoff to the falls. Follow the gravel road for a couple of miles until you reach the falls.
