Stage Barn Crystal Cave

The Stage Barn Crystal Cave is reported to be the largest private cave system in the Black Hills of South Dakota. The colors of the calcite crystals located in the cave are said to be exceptional and well worth the time to explore the area.

Stage Barn Crystal Cave is located in the Stagebarn Canyon. Both the cave and the canyon were named after a stagecoach barn that existed in the area and was used by the local stages that used to frequent the local transportation route nearby. This area was one of the most traveled areas into and out of the Black Hills region of South Dakota in the early days of this new frontier.

Another name for the Stagebarn Canyon is the Botany Canyon, because it has a tremendous amount of flora and wildlife. The Canyon is revered by Native Americans who gather herbs in the area for medicinal and spiritual uses.

To enter the caves, you must locate the entrance which is below the limestone cliffs. It is a rather steep walk, but it has fantastic views. The actual tour of the cave is fairly level and not very difficult. The cave consists of three separate levels, two of which can be visited. The cave has vibrant colorful display of calcite crystals, helectites and boxwork.

It is a wonderful experience for the average adventurer who is fascinated with the intricate geology of caves.
