Deadwood is located in the heart of the Black Hills along the intersection of Highways 85 and 14A, which both run through the downtown area. If you are traveling via Interstate 90, follow Hwy 85 south to Deadwood. From Deadwood, Hwy 385 heads southeast to Mt. Rushmore and Crazy Horse Memorial.
Once you are in Deadwood, SD, a great way to get around town is by trolley. It runs during summer and winter months, making stops at hotels, shopping areas, and sights of interest. There are places to park, both free and metered, in the downtown area.
The Black Hills, which surround the historic town of Deadwood, look like an island of treed mountains right in the center of the Great Plains. The area is home to many different activities and things to do like visiting Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse Memorial, and five National Parks, driving along a handful of scenic drives to see beautiful cascading waterfalls, enjoying a system of fantastic hiking trails and numerous locations to view wildlife, and finding great un-crowded fishing holes. Deadwood is also home to not-to-be-missed western traditions like shoot-outs and chuckwagons. In the town of Deadwood you will find many restored historic houses, mines, museums, saloons, and gambling halls. Make sure to visit Wild Bill and Calamity Jane's graves at Mount Moriah Cemetery or spend an afternoon panning for gold at one of the many local mines. Gambling has been the popular way to spend the evenings ever since the Gold Rush in 1876. You can still experience the gaming tradition today in many different halls and saloons in Deadwood.
