Deadwood Activities
Mt. Rushmore is a must see if you have never been to the area. Representing courage, dreams, freedom, and greatness, Presidents Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, and Roosevelt tower above a great viewing amphitheater. The monument has a nightly presentation and lighting ceremony. Another great monument to visit in the area is the Crazy Horse Memorial. Still in progress, this monument will be the world's largest sculpture. You can visit the museum for a detailed history of Native American life and orientation center where local Indian artists have their art and crafts on display.
A great way to enter the area and to appreciate the natural environment of the Black Hills is by driving along Spearfish Canyon Scenic Byway. The byway connects Interstate 90 to Highway 85, traveling through the town of Spearfish. Pass by breathtaking views and unique flora through the canyon.
Just within the town limits of Deadwood make sure to enjoy attractions like historic houses and buildings that have been restored, many local mines, museums, saloons and gambling halls, and access to wonderful hiking trails. Stick around for some old west traditions like chuckwagons and shoot-outs. Pass by Calamity Jane and Wild Bill's graves at the Mt. Moriah Cemetery, take a walking tour of historic town streets, or spend some time in one of the many traditional gambling halls. In the more remote areas around Deadwood, there are many opportunities to view wildlife like bison, wild horses, and in fact, a wide range of reptiles.
Deadwood sits along the intersection of Hwy 85 and 14A which run north to south and directly through the downtown area. Hwy 85 north heads to Interstate 90 and south will reach Gold Mine and Lead three miles down the road. Hwy 385 heads south east for 44 miles to Mt. Rushmore.
