Black Hills Community Theatre

The Black Hills Community Theatre is located in Rapid City in South Dakota.  It brings together all sorts of theatrical performances and talents, amateur to professional, providing locals and tourists with an extravaganza of entertainment through the year.  In fact, it has a season of performances that should not be missed.

Rapid City in South Dakota offers lively entertainment for all ages at the Black Hills Community Theatre.  Varied talents of all levels and ages entertain locals and visitors with a season of performances that are both inviting and exciting.

Located at 1202 East Saint Francis Street, the theatre started out as the Group Theatre in 1968.  It is a non-profit organization that offers productions and theatrical type opportunities for the entire region.

In the 1st five operating years, the Black Hills Community Theatre presented performances and productions in spaces that could be found in dinner type clubs, churches and local schools.  In the mid-70’s, the theatre was moved into the Dahl Fine Arts Center and its name changed to its present one.  However, in the mid-1990’s, the theatre was again moved to the Arts Resource Center, joining the Rapid City Children’s Chorus and the Black Hills Symphony Orchestra.  Since then, the theatre has expanded to include a rehearsal area, two shops and varied administration type offices. 

The Black Hills Community Theatre’s season covers five major productions.  These include children’s performances for fundraising for the Dinner Theatre, varied special type projects, workshops and theatrical type classes.

The Black Hills Community Theatre is run by a directors’ board, headed by a managing director.  Varied positions are always offered for design work, production skills, artistic type talents and acting.  In fact, anything related to theatrical productions are always needed.

The theatre is always eager to receive new participation and production ideas.  Many of the people that bring together the productions for each performance night are volunteers.  Local community enthusiasm lends to back and main stage set ups, lighting, general production and even acting talents.  Locals and visitors are encouraged to participate when and if they can in varied levels, especially from the local Rapid City communities and neighborhoods.  In fact, the Black Hills Community Theatre has truly become a major contributor towards the community spirit, cultural diversity and artistic enthusiasm that Rapid City is famous for.

Tickets for the Black Hills Community Theatre performances and season are available at their theatre box office or online.  Prices vary according to performance types, ages of the theatre goers and the time of year.  However, tickets are very reasonable and seasonal passes are also available, as well as group rates.
