Black Hills Symphony Orchestra
Originally named the Rapid City Symphony Orchestra Society, the organization changed it name to the Black Hills Symphony Orchestra in 1988. The new name reflects the involvement and commitment of the organization to the entire Black Hills area of South Dakota. Starting as a little group of string players nearly seventy-two years ago, the Symphony Orchestra has grown tremendously, now involving approximately ninety musicians, including sixty string players.
Located in Rapid City, South Dakota, the Black Hills Symphony Orchestra has been providing fine orchestral performances and symphonic music education for the people of the Black Hills regions for the past seventy-two years.
In addition to a regular season schedule which includes many fine performances and guest artists and conductors, the Black Hills Symphony Orchestra works with other art and theatre organizations to produce full stage productions. Individual members and the Orchestra as a whole also provides educational outreach programs for the youth of the Black Hills area. Youth programs include fourth Grade Concert, Music in the Schools, Young Artist Competition, the Black Hills String Retreat, the Rushmore Competition and Black Hills Suzuki School among others.
