Getting Here
Visiting the Black Hills and surrounding areas can be the highlight of
a cross country road trip. Located along the I-90 corridor near
Rapid City, South Dakota, the term 'Black Hills' primarily refers to a
ponderosa pine forest that rises above the surrounding flatlands.
From a distance, the hills appear black in color and reach an elevation
of 7,242 feet! Native American tribes originally inhabited the
region. The Sioux believed that the hills were sacred and
magical. Paha Sapa (meaning Black Hills in the Lakota language)
was a place where rival tribes would meet to peacefully settle
disputes. Today, the Crazy Horse Memorial and Custer State Park
allow visitors to explore the rich Native American History of the Black
Hills.
