As the second largest city in the state of Wyoming, Casper (pop. 50,000) boasts a wide variety of attractions. If you are combining Yellowstone National Park, Grand Teton National Park and South Dakota's Black Hills in to one vacation, you will most likely pass through Casper, Wyoming. If you are coming north from Colorado or Laramie, Casper will also be on your way to the Black Hills. Located at the junction of I-25, Hwy 20 and Hwy 220, Casper is about half way between western Wyoming and the Black Hills National Forest (about 5 hours from each). It is an excellent place to stop for a night. Casper would in fact be an excellent place to spend a few days or more!
An assortment of recreational and cultural activities are sure to suit your fancy during your stay in Casper. In the city of Casper you can visit 10 different museums! Downtown Casper offers some great restaurants, shopping and art galleries. You'll be sure to enjoy the sculptures lining the streets. During the evening hours, your choices include theater, symphony performances, movies, or even bowling! The Casper rodeo is one of the best in the country! Barrel racing, bucking bulls and fancy rope throwing will be the thrill of your trip.
Casper, Wyoming is built along the shores of the North Platte River. The river is the lifeline for the residents of Casper, as well as a thriving ecosystem surrounding the town. Three bird refuges in Casper provide protected habitat for over 200 species of birds. Many visitors to Casper come specifically to watch the bald eagles, golden eagles, hawks, falcons and other birds. If you are a fisherman, you will enjoy the crystal clear water of the North Platte, but you'll have to share the river with these birds and other wildlife. Expect to see pronghorn antelope, mule deer and perhaps even a couple moose during your stay.
The North Platte River also is enjoyed for rafting, kayaking and hiking along the shores. 11 miles of paved trail provides access to the river shores. Just ask for directions to the Platte River Parkway and take a stroll to stretch out your traveling legs! Casper Mountain and Muddy Mountain also have extensive networks of trails for walking, hiking, biking, and backpacking.
