Getting Here //
On your way to the Black Hills, you might as well stop and learn a little something about the American energy supply. Gillette, Wyoming, which is located about 3 hours west of the Black Hills on Interstate 90, has harvested more than 250 million tons of coal! Massive surface coal mines and coal bed methane gas sites are visible all around Gillette, Wyoming. The town of Gillette has enjoyed a rather prosperous boom from the development of these resources. Travelers, therefore, will find many modern amenities and other comforts of home that are rare in such a small rural town.
Think about the last time that you lost power in your house. As the "Energy Capital of the Nation", Gillette, Wyoming provides America with electricity to heat homes, produce goods, use appliances, and turn on the lights! If you take the time to stop in Gillette, you will have a better understanding of where this electricity comes. Taking a tour of one of the mines will provide you with insight into something that you can't live without. If you are short on time, it is possible at least to stop at one of the vistas overlooking the mines.
Beyond coal and methane mining, Gillette, Wyoming has much to offer. The most famous nearby attraction is the geologic masterpiece of Wyoming, "Devils Tower". If you have ever seen the movie "Close Encounters of the Third Kind", you will recognize this unique and beautiful rock. Rising 1,267 feet straight out of the ground, Devils Tower has long been a sacred place to Native American Tribes. In 1906, the area was named America's first National Monument. Visiting the Devils Tower is something that everyone should do at least once in their lifetime!
The town of Gillette is also near the Thunder Basin National Grassland. This open space is a fabulous place to go bird-watching and hiking. With 1.8 million acres of preserved land, your chances of seeing large game are above average.
If you are traveling with kids, Gillette will be one of the highlights of your trip! Get those rascals out of the car and spend the day at Gillette's fun-filled water park. Be sure to wear sunscreen- Wyoming's sun is deceptively strong.
