Yellowstone National Park
Yellowstone National Park is not only the first National Park of the United States, it is also the largest. Covering the full Northwestern corner of Wyoming, Yellowstone National Park contains some of the world's most interesting and beautiful natural wonders. Across 2.2 million acres (3, 472 square miles), you'll find a variety of volcanic thermal features, as well as gorgeous waterfalls, deep blue lakes and a full spectrum of wildlife. People visit Yellowstone National Park to witness the infamous "Old Faithful" geyser. It's hard to believe that water actually gushes up out of the ground at predictable intervals. Please refrain from attempting a Yogi Bear style surf experience as the geyser water is actually extremely hot.

Generally speaking, it is very important to stay on trails and refrain from touching any water in Yellowstone National Park (no swimming except in designated areas!). The reason for extreme caution is that Yellowstone National Park sits on top of an enormous volcano. Geologically referred to as a "hot spot", the volcanic features of Yellowstone are not completely understood. Some scientists have recently discussed the Yellowstone area in terms of an underground "super volcano" that could someday cause enormous destruction.
There are 5 entrances to Yellowstone National Park. If you are coming from the Black Hills of South Dakota, you will most likely enter from Cody, Wyoming on the east. It is also possible that you will go over Beartooth pass and then enter through the rather obscure Cooke City northeast entrance. When you enter the park, your first stop should be one of the visitor centers. Because Yellowstone National Park is so large and diverse, it is important to plan your route and activities. Some highlights include the wildlife viewing in the Lamar Valley, waterfalls in the yellow-rock Grand Canyon, geyser loop in the Upper Geyser Basin (Old Faithful) and beautiful Yellowstone Lake.
