Old Fort Meade was built in 1878 during the Indian Wars. It stayed open longer than any other forts in the area and was finally turned over to Veterans Affairs in 1944. The Old Fort Meade Cavalry Museum now tells the story of why it existed and gives a historic account of what times were like at the fort. The fort was established to maintain peace with and to provide protection against the Sioux and Cheyenne Indians.

It was the site where the Wounded Knee Campaign was designed and directed. Displays in the museum show cavalry equipment like saddles and uniforms, letters written at the time of the Battle of Little Bighorn, and many crafts and tools built by American Indians. There is also a blacksmith shop and a Harley Davidson from 1942 which was used as an army motorcycle. You can also see officer quarters, which have not changed nor been restored since 1888. You can visit the museum at its location on state highway 34, one mile east of Sturgis. It is open from May 15 to September 15 seven days a week between the hours of 9am and 5pm.
