Museum of Geology
The Museum of Geology in South Dakota has dedicated its work to researching minerals and fossils of the Black Hills and educating the public and students. It is, therefore, an ever growing project and collection which today encompasses over 250,000 fossils and 6,000 minerals.
The Museum of Geology welcomes all to view and learn about fossils of prehistoric mammals from the Badlands, marine and non-marine reptiles and dinosaurs from the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods, and minerals from the Black Hills. Because the museum is linked to the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, acquisition of minerals and fossils is a part of their curriculum. Visit the Museum of Geology and learn just how the Black Hills looked and lived before humans. It is open during the summer from 8am to 6pm Monday through Saturday and 12pm to 6pm on Sundays. Winter hours are 8am to 5pm Monday through Friday, 9am to 4pm on Saturday, and 1pm to 4pm on Sunday. The museum is located at 501 East St. Joseph in Rapid City.
