I feel lucky to do the amount of traveling I am able to do, but it never fails that when I am pulling out my ID for the intricate security systems which will get me to my destinations, the people checking my ID, in a friendly attempt to make conversation, make some comment about South Dakota.  “Oh, yeah, Dakota-that's where that Fargo movie took place, right?” or “Wow, I don't see this ID often…how far south is South Dakota?” are some of my favorites.  I certainly struggle with geography, and we as humans try to make connections with what we do know when faced with unknown situations or information, so I can understand from where their comments come, and I do appreciate their kindness to try to make a connection.  I also understand that far fewer people from South Dakota travel through other places because there are far fewer people in South Dakota than other states (which I love and would not change for the world, by the way), but I figure since I have a chance to be one of the few South Dakotans people have met in these situations, I might as well use the opportunity to promote my state.  I always enjoy the look on people's faces when I come up with something unique or interesting about the great places and faces to be found in South Dakota that is sure to blow them away and make them reconsider their prior lack of knowledge about our state.  If the first comment has something to do with location, I usually throw out the fact that South Dakota actually contains the Center of the Nation and then hope that the individual pulls out a map later to verify if the statement holds true.  We could all use a little help with geography, but looking at the 50 United States, South Dakota sits front and center geographically.Read more...
