It used to be a coveted position to be the first person to have that hotel key, opening the door to a world outside of the cramped car on family road trips. As kids, we didn't often get to stay the night in establishments besides grandma's or a cousin's house. So, it was a special treat when we did pull off the road and see a sign advertising comfortable beds and continental breakfast. Whichever of the lucky siblings opened the door, the rest of us would soon pile in after, eager to jump on the beds and claim our specified “locations” that were off-limits to anyone else's luggage or personage. The immaculate room wouldn't be that way for long, as the first thought on our minds would be to strip into our swimming suits. That way we could get in every moment of time in the pool possible before the inevitable 10 p.m. closure, leaving a room strewn with socks, shoes and child-size clothing, as if five little tornados had just whirled through the room.
