Deer Mountain Ski Area
Located just a few minutes from Deadwood, South Dakota, Deer Mountain Ski Area is a full service ski area, offering courses for downhill skiing, cross-country skiing, snowboarding and tubing.
The mountain has a vertical drop of more than 850 feet. Deer Mountain Ski Area also has one of the best beginner hills in the Black Hills. The gentle slope and wide open terrain, helps beginners discover the joy of skating on snow without being intimidated by extreme pitches or an obstacle of trees.
The area moves many skiers each hour through the use of a triple chair lift and two Poma lifts. There are a total of forty-four trails. For your comfort and convenience there is also a two story base lodge that contains a cafeteria and lounge.
Rental equipment is available as well as ski lessons for skiers of all capabilities. Snowboard lessons are also available.
Night skiing can be enjoyed at Deer Mountain from 4 pm until 9 pm on Fridays and Saturdays.
If you prefer to cross country ski, you can enjoy approximately ten miles of groomed cross-country trails. These trails offer all levels of cross-country skiing, from beginner to experienced.
If you would rather snowboard, Deer Mountain has the only snow-skate part in the Black Hills area.
Want to ride on top of the snow without being strapped to anything, then try tubing at Deer Mountain. The tubing runs are serviced by a lift, so there is no dragging your tube back up the hill after a thrilling ride. Tubing is a great family activity which has all the speed and thrills that kids – or adults acting like kids – can handle. There are morning and afternoon sessions for tubing. You can also enjoy night tubing sessions from 5 pm to 8 pm on Fridays and Saturdays.
Families will appreciate the reasonably priced lift tickets and equipment rentals. There are reduced rates for multi-day use, students, seniors and groups.
Generally, Deer Mountain Ski Area is open for operation on Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday from 9 am to 4 pm, Friday and Saturday from 9 am to 9 pm, to accommodate the night skiing and tubing from 4 pm to 9 pm.
