Terry Peak Ski Area
One of the highest mountain peaks between the Rocky Mountains and Alps, Terry Peak is over 7,000 feet high. Located on this peak is Terry Peak Ski Area. The Ski Area is in a natural snow belt in the northern Black Hills of South Dakota, just three miles west of historic Lead/Deadwood, South Dakota. Its location allows it to receive nearly 150 inches of snow each season. Combine the natural snow fall with snowmaking equipment which covers over 60 percent of the mountain, and skiers are ensured a great base to ski on from top to bottom.
With over 400 acres of area, and a vertical drop of 1,100 feet, Terry Peak is one of the largest ski areas located in the heartland of the United States. It boasts 20 miles of trails which are serviced by five chairlifts – two of those being high-speed quads, two triple chairs and one double chair. There is also a beginner chairlift which is designated for those skiers who are taking lessons only.
Terry Peak Ski Area has definitely progressed since it began in 1936 when a rope tow was installed for club members. Back then the grooming of the slopes was achieved by club members hiking up and down the mountain on their skis in order to pack down the snow. Terry Peak Ski Area even has it own radio station.
Lessons as well as rental equipment are available. If you want to expand your skills or simply try something new, there are specialty lessons which include snowboarding and/or telemark skiing. Snowboarders are permitted on all runs including a terrain park and a half pipe.
The old west historic towns of Lead and Deadwood offer skiers many lodging options, which include private rentals, hotels, or Bed and Breakfasts. Other sites in the area which are all within an hour's drive from Terry Peak are Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Hill City, and the Badlands as well as other historical attractions, limited stakes gaming, and museums.
The beauty of the Black Hills, the abundance of snow, and reasonable rates make Terry Peak Ski Area a great place for enjoying winter family recreation.
