The Black Hills of South Dakota has all the ingredients for the recipe of a good, enjoyable family vacation. It has wonderful natural beauty, many options for recreation,
family oriented meals and lodging and, who could forget, Mount Rushmore.
In Custer State Park, young and old alike, will enjoy viewing the wildlife, which includes herds of roaming buffalo. Although the feeding of wildlife is restricted in the Park, the rangers do allow visitors to feed the burros. The burros are not indigenous to the area, but were brought in during the early part of the century to accommodate tourists. They are not longer used for that purpose.
If the family is up for a short hike, try the mile long Badger Clark Historic Trial. Many other scenic hiking trails are available.
There are four lodges owned and operated by the State of South Dakota in the Black Hills region. Each of them offers family activities, family dining, and reasonable rates for lodging and dining. You can join a group to view Mount Rushmore and the Crazy Horse Memorial. There is even a lighting ceremony which takes place at dusk at Mount Rushmore which illuminated the faces in the dark.
One of the newest family fun attractions is the Alpine Slide which is located about 2 ½ miles from Mount Rushmore. The adventure begins with a chairlift ride to the top through the pine forest, where you can enjoy a panoramic view of the Black Hills area which includes the town of Keystone and Mount Rushmore. Those not feeling adventurous or brave enough to take the twisting, turning ride to the bottom on the Alpine Slide, can take the chairlift back down to the valley floor. All ages are welcome. There is no cost for children age 6 and under but they must ride with an adult. There are also special rates if you purchase a package of tickets.
Other fun visitor attractions for you and your kids to enjoy together include the world's largest collection of reptiles, six theme and amusement parks, dinosaur exhibits, Old West shootouts, a western supper and music show, indoor and outdoor stages and theaters, cowboy and Native American heritage.
You and the kids can also explore a cave, check out an underground gold mine or view all the wonderful sites from a helicopter or a tram.
The kids will be talking about the fun family vacation you all shared in the Black Hills of South Dakota for years to come.
