If you own a motorcycle or can borrow one, if you love to ride through scenic hills on mountain roads, if you enjoy checking out the latest in motorcycle gear and gadgets, and if you enjoy wonderful food in the company of great friends, then you need to go to Sturgis.
Sturgis, South Dakota has been the destination for motorcycle enthusiasts from all over the United States and around the world since 1938. This small community in the northern Black Hills of South Dakota promotes this rally for seven days every August. Each year there is an ocean of motorcycles, leather and denim, and of course people, who wash over Sturgis.
For two weeks before and for as last as two weeks after the conclusion of the rally, motorcycle traffic to and around South Dakota dramatically increases.
Billed as the biggest rally in the Midwest, Sturgis will be celebrating its 64th rally in the year 2005. The Sturgis gathering is scheduled for Monday August 8th through Saturday August 13th. Expected attendance is 400,000 to 600,000. There are many regularly scheduled events which include bike shows, motorcycle races, local tours, parties, product display booths.
While in Sturgis, if you can make your way past all the people and motorcycles, don't fail to get a visit in at the National Motorcycle Museum which is also located in the town.
Because the Black Hills is beside Sturgis, you will want to go exploring on your own to places like Spearfish Canyon Highway which is noted for being excellent canyon riding. You may also want to venture into the gambling dens and restored buildings of Deadwood and the Crazy Horse Memorial and Mount Rushmore.
If you attend the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally once, you will understand why this small South Dakota town has become a must destination for so many motorcyclists. And motorcycle touring on the way to and back from Sturgis is part of the fun.
