Because from a distance the dense forests of the Black Hills give them a dark appearance the Lakota Sioux named the area, Paha Sapa for "hills that are black." But that's the surface translation. The deeper translation is "the heart of everything that is." For summer family vacations, there is no better destination than the Black Hills of South Dakota.
