Cross Country Skiing
Wonderful winter activities abound in Black Hills South Dakota. When there is a blanket of snow covering the faces of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt, there is a different sense and feel to the world. Many winter visitors come to enjoy the many trails provided for cross country skiing. Cross country skiing gives the participant that uncrowded feeling. Cross country skiing provides a means to travel the remote areas of the Black Hills in complete solitude.
Four specific areas in the Black Hills National Forest have been designated as cross country ski trails. There are also two state parks with cross country ski trails. Although the snow will begin to fall sooner than November, it does not begin to accumulate until later in that month and will remain in good condition for cross country skiing until mid or late March. The weather does vary during the winter months, but it is possible to enjoy 60-degree days in January or February.
Cross country skiing is an excellent way to see wildlife. The area of Black Hills has 18 peaks over 7,000 feet and descends to lower meadows and forested areas. Due to the changes in terrain, abundant wildlife can be found which include deer, elk, buffalo and big horn sheep.
Before heading out on the trail, it is best to be prepared. Many fitness elements combine to make cross country skiing enjoyable. The primary ones are strength, endurance, technique, balance, agility, and coordination. However, with a little preparation, cross country skiing can provide not only great exercise, but the experiences of a life time.
